Multifunctional and handy products are my favorite. Who needs a few separate products when you can achieve the look you want with just one product, right? This is probably the reason why this RMS Beauty “Un” Cover-Up Concealer Foundation* is one of the most lusted makeup items ever, green beauty or not. The last couple of weeks, I’ve been using it every day, and here’s what I think of it.
Like I mentioned before, it is a multi-tasking, two-in-one product that can be used as a concealer and as a cream foundation. The “Un” Cover-Up comes in a little jar of only 5.67 grams, which might not seem like a lot, but this is a normal size packaging for a concealer, and it will last you a long time. If you’re going to use it as a foundation, it will, of course, last you shorter, but because it’s such creamy and good coverage, you won’t need that much of a product.
The “Un” Cover-Up comes in seven shades with 000 being the fairest and 55 being the darkest. The shade I have is 00, which is the second lightest shade in the range, described as “a light shade for the true snow whites”. If you have fair skin, you already know that sometimes it’s not that easy to find base makeup products suitable for fair skin tones, so kudos to RMS Beauty for including lighter shades as well. Shade 00 looks dark yellow in the jar, but as you can see from a swatch below, it becomes lighter on the skin and blends out very well. I’m pretty confident this will suit any skin tone – warm, cool or neutral. My skin is fair/light with neutral undertones, and 00 is a perfect match.
The “Un” Cover-Up has no scent whatsoever. It has a nice creamy consistency that allows it to easily glide onto the skin and blend in seamlessly. It gives light coverage, which is buildable to medium coverage without getting cakey and gross. I find that it effectively neutralizes red spots, covers imperfections, especially, dark undereye circles. The product contains highly nourishing and protective ingredients, such as coconut oil, cacao butter, and castor seed oil. If you have oily skin and are extremely prone to breakouts, you might consider using this only as a concealer because it contains coconut oil, which is considered comedogenic at warm temperatures. Other than that, it’s suitable for all skin types.
Some say they don’t even need to additionally moisturize and prep the skin before using the “Un” Cover-Up, which is probably true for normal, combination or oily skin types. However, if your skin tends to be dry or if you have dry patches, no matter the skin type, I recommend moisturizing the skin because it just makes it easier to apply the foundation/concealer and for it to settle.
The application is what I struggled the most with this product. I mean, there’s a unique swirl brush recommended to use so you can get one of those, but I’ve decided to use tools that I have and see which one would work best. You’ll need the tool to be sturdy, yet gentle and soft, so I find that a makeup sponge (beauty blender or any ordinary makeup sponge), a buffing brush or a large flat foundation brush work best for whole face application. A makeup sponge, a concealer brush or your clean, warm fingers work best for concealing unwanted flaws and under eye area. To be honest, it wasn’t love at first sight for the main reason that it took me a few applications to finally get how to use this product correctly. In the beginning, I would just dab a brush in the jar and slap it right on my skin, which resulted in using too much product, sticky face, and uneven application. After playing around, I found out that the best way is to apply a very thin layer of it all over the face and then apply some extra on the areas that require more concealing. Works like magic! This way, it leaves my face even, radiant, but with excellent coverage where needed. The “Un” Cover-Up stays put all day, but my forehead and nose start to shine in about five hours after application, so if you’re using it as a foundation and you tend to get oily, I would suggest to set it with a translucent powder. Overall, I’m impressed with the product and can totally understand the hype around it.
So, that’s all for today. I hope my experience was helpful for you to decide if this is a product you want to spend your money on. RMS Beauty “Un” Cover-Up Concealer/Foundation is available in 5.67 g jar for $36/£28. I got mine online at Love Lula with free international delivery.
Have you tried the “Un” Cover-Up? What’s your preferred way to use this product?
Thanks for your review! I’ve been wanting to try this product out. I’ve been using coconut oil as a face moisturizer to make sure my skin doesn’t get irritated or break out before purchasing this.
I just don’t know how to decide which shade will work best for me, though :/ That’s my only problem… is deciding on a shade. That’s been my biggest problem with transitioning to green beauty… Figuring out how to pick the right shade, because all my green beauty purchases are done online.
Do you have any recommendations?
If you are hesitant about which shade to choose, try samples. I’ve seen a couple of online stores (like The Detox Market, the Nature of Beauty) that offer samples of Un Cover-Up.
I definitely need something like that in my life, it would be great for those spotty days! 🙂
Absolutely, Petra! It’s one of the best concealers that I’ve tried.
such a great review! I love the look of this concealer/foundation. Might have to give it a try in the warmer months 🙂
