When it comes to history, I’m a total geek. Books and movies that are based on true historic facts and figures are much more exciting for me than a complete fiction. It makes my husband laugh when I read a book and, at the same time, double check the facts on google to research more about things or people mentioned in it. But you know what I love even more than that? Feminine characters. Heroines. Powerful women who, despite often being underestimated, shaped history in countless ways.
Imagine my joy when I found out about REEK Damn Rebel Bitches perfume*. Called “the first feminist perfume”, Damn Rebel Bitches is inspired by the fierce women of the Jacobite uprisings, a series of rebellions and wars in Great Britain and Ireland in 18th century. So, it’s more than a simple perfume. It’s a perfume that embodies women empowered with courage, wit, and love.
This is a hand-mixed, hand-poured perfume made in collaboration with an award-winning perfumer, Sarah McCartney. The bottle of REEK perfume is sleek and simple, which makes perfect sense: inconspicuous on the outside and a darn rebel on the inside. The scent has hints of blood orange, hazelnut, pink peppercorn, clary sage and malt. According to REEK, these particular scents were chosen because they would have been familiar to the women and would have used in their lives.
Damn Rebel Bitches is a warm, citrusy, yet light and woody scent. As the scent develops, it becomes more toned down and has some bitterness to it. It’s a very sophisticated perfume, but still fresh and modern. I rarely wear perfume, so when I do, I make sure this is not just something average that “I like”. Like doesn’t cut it for me. I would only wear a perfume if I’m crazy about it. Damn Rebel Bitches is exactly one of those perfumes.
REEK Damn Rebel Bitches is available online at REEK Perfume in a full size 50ml spray bottle ($90/£75) and 2ml samples ($12/£10). They currently deliver in the UK and the EU, but there’s also a waiting list available for the US as they have intentions to expand.
